But I'll be lookin' for eight
When they pull that gate
And nice guys get washed away like the snow in the rain
There's been a load of compromising
On the road to my horizon
And a country boy is all I'll ever be
Now it's been twelve years since I sold my soul
To the devil in L.A.
We came from the West Virginia coal mines
And the Rocky Mountains, and the western skies
And we can skin a buck, we can run a trotline
And a country boy can survive
I guess it's 'cause the truth
Is the hardest thing I ever faced
'Cause you can't change the truth
In the slightest way I tried
This suit and this tie, is just a disguise
This ain't really me
Some people are born to be tied down
Some people are born to be free
I read about some squirrely guy who claims he just don't believe in fightin'
An' I wonder just how long the rest of us can count on bein' free
They love our milk an' honey, but they preach about some other way of livin'
I guess we're all gonna be what we're gonna be
So, what do you do with good ole boys like me?
Don Williams, Good Ole Boys Like Me
A poor girl wants to marry
And a rich girl wants to flirt
A rich man goes to college
And a poor man goes to work
A drunkard wants another drink of wine
And a politician wants your vote
Now, when the world's spinning round, too fast for me,
And I need a place to dream.
So I come to your banks, I sit in your shade
Relive the memories
I'm travelin' down the road and I'm flirtin' with disaster
I got the pedal to the floor and my life is runnin' faster
I'm out of money, out of hope, it looks like self destruction
Well, how much more can we take with all of this corruption
We're flirtin' with disaster, ya'll know what I mean
I was raised on my parents's favorites, so Motown and 60's pop and disco from mom, 60&70's rock and bluegrass and opera/classical from my dad. Punk and metal were my main thing, and then I kinda stumbled into the other genres on my own, which is why I only like a few C&W artists, a handful of rappers, a modern song here and there. I'm not even certain I could elaborate the differences between country and western. 😆
I'm more Cash and Hank Sr., but I do love me some CDB!
