When people ask me if I have kids, I say no - I have grown-ups! Which is quite hilarious, considering how immature I am. My greatest source of pride are my children. A son and two daughters, with birth dates in the 80’s 90’s and 00’. Scattered from Manson, Iowa (pop. 1657) to Brooklyn to Boston.
All three far more advanced in life than I ever was at their stages of life, in terms of accomplishing the goals they’ve set from themselves. For many reasons, my long-term goal setting functions seemed inadequate. I happened to end up where I am, rather than plan where I’ll be.
I mean, I guess it’s worked out ok, but I had to swim through a mile of shit to advance a yard or two. Maybe that’s where my grown-ups learned their work-ethic. Because they are some of the most relentless, ambitious, and driven people I know. And now, their hard work pays off.
The pictures above are out the window of the 130-year-old brownstone I’m living in this week in Brooklyn. Prospect Park is across the street. I have the entire 3rd floor, with a little kitchen and 3-bedrooms. What a life!
The Oldest is graduating from NYU with a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning. She will be 30 this year, and after her grad degree from Whittier-‘18- (Nixon’s alma mater), she served almost three years in the Peace Corps, living in Guatemala. She was in country when this happened, less than 20 miles from her apartment. She assisted in helping the survivors.
I’ll be pausing my usual weekly post this week and next to enjoy the moment I’m living in. I will be posting Notes and photo-posts celebrating my time in NY. Today is full-on tourist, starting at Ground Zero and then ending up wherever I end up. Sounds like a plan for a good life!
Enjoy this life, and plan for what comes. Then have a good time.
Ric
Have a great time visiting your daughter! Congrats to her on her graduation. Also, it's nice to read words from a proud dad.
That is absolutely beautiful. Nature never seemed so sweet. You're so lucky and living the dream, don't you forget it!
