I foolishly believe that watching a documentary after getting home after a midnight shift will relax my brain and quicken my slumber. Yeah no. Especially this series.
It’s right in my wheelhouse: skepticism and disbelief. In fact, Magellan has a entire collection of familiar topics being questioned and looked at in new and different perspectives. Ancient Egypt. The Cosmos. And especially War & Military.
The three episodes above lay out America’s sad and complicit behavior in the Vietnam War. Imagine having that knowledge in real time. Would the population have acted much differently?
The Great Pyramid of Khufu is mind-numbing in its scale. It’s mind-blowing in it’s construction by hand. The common belief that slaves built this doesn’t fit the master-craftmanship required and ultimately executed. It’s longevity is testament to that fact.
And lest we deny the end of the road for humanity, Space Wars snaps us right back to the future. We’re talking about shooting missiles into space to destroy orbiting objects. Some Dr. Evil-level planning going here.
With all of the inane hoopla breathlessly described as deeply ceremonial pomp and circumstance surrounding the coronation of the latest in a long line of Monarchs. Over 1500 years long in fact. The longest reigning monarchy in world history. This series is deeply fascinating. The story lives on literally over the past weekend.
I’m left to wonder how the peasantry felt and reacted to the innumerable coronations stretching back to Egbert, the first Saxon King of England in 802. Probably much of the same, supporters and dissenters, opposing forces and powerful rulers.
